THE WORD LOVE

Ludlow Press Poetry
Was suppose to be here tonight
But instead
Was a victim of a drive-by shooting
By an alleged group
Of rival verbs
Seeking notoriety.
Yes, there were few witnesses,
the moon…
June…
Several songwriters
Who are desperately seeking
Couplets to rhyme with the words
Turtle dove, glove and
All of the above
Who are refusing to
comment?
Unless advised by their lawyers.
The word love
Was scheduled to appear
In this poem
Right about now.
It also had planned
To appear in other places this evening…
The beach,
A movie premier starring Julia Roberts,
All marriage proposals
And several other proposals that had nothing
At all to do with marriage.
Also on the agenda
A used car sale, a home sale
And a surprise cameo appearance
At the Mustang Motel
Off La Cienga
The word Love
Had been rumored
To have been overused, overworked
And underqualifed
In this day of expanding technology.
There have been talks with
The William Morris Agency
For a lengthy biography
To be followed by a movie
That will not be directed
By Woody Allen.
Its passing will be greatly missed
By Top 40 radio and advertising copywriters.
Several metaphysics
And at least three people
From the Psychic Friends Network
Say that It
Will be like light
And transform
Itself through
Reincarnation into
Another form of energy.
For myself,
I believe it will come back again
In the form of a
Candle that
Will shine its
Wisdom's light
In dark times.
Or
It will come back again
As a cop
Showing up
At the exact time
When it is not expected
To show up
At all.
