Ludlow Press Poetry
Signs of her former,
physical presence had wavered
Everywhere: strayed strands of her fragile, blond hair;
A delicate pair of sun spectacles cast aside; a cotton article
Among the sofa pillows where she once loved to lounge.
I still see her smile evaporating in the dusky air.
It once radiated from here petite, freckled face
Then teeth seemed to flash beneath pale, rosy cheeks
When she laughed to disturb my thoughts and I didn’t care.
Sometimes she prodded me into an unwanted reminder
That the world really existed outside of us
Even when her coquettish face was close to mine, luring me,
A rock throned siren. Then we ignored the panes’ reflections
And those multi-hued water colours when it rained,
Turning many times with the seasons’ shades
Even when shrouded with darkness and foliage;
An ever-blossoming earth and her still lingering scent.
Naturally we laughed and cried, hooted, shouted, sometimes
We whispered like breeze tossed grasses when bushes danced.
We ate and drank vociferously, genteelly according to our mood
And fashion. We filled our senses even when we slept.
Dreams bloomed. Then she was gone. My world ceased to spin
Beyond those rusty fragments in the windows and the rooms
Banged against each other like my crazy thoughts. The dusty air
Was empty of her presence like half hinged, clattering shutters.
All those pictures shattered in my mind like the twilight
And made me bleed; a sunset beneath a sash of rain cloud.
My memories rolled away, constantly evaporating,
All was engulfed again, until sleep rekindled my desires.
