Mockingbirds' Reign

After the rain,

mockingbirds,

like roadrunners,

race across greening grass

in pursuit

of low-flying moths.

They rid the yard of insects

as I follow them

through window panes.

Their assault is viscious,

their legs untiring.

In the dampness of my mood,

I marvel at their swiftness

and the precision

of their vision.

The winged-white stripes

that mesmerize me

on the verge of dusk

invite pure sleep

when I lower the shades

on evening.
